Sunset in the Smoke

Stepping outside, I smelled smoke from far away fires as it spiraled upward to join the dusts of our heat dome dragon--the one that has poised over the prairie for a hundred days, scorching us with its torrid breath. Dingy, brown smoke-- Low to the ground, it came sliding over the acres of dead dry grass, rising again, but just enough to make the sun blur at the edges.
